Marie Visker of Burnt Hills Named To Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society at Hudson Valley Community College

Hudson Valley Community College student Marie Visker of Burnt Hills was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for two-year institutions of higher learning.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is indicative of academic excellence. Those inducted are matriculated students who have met standards including a grade point average of 3.71 or higher.

Visker is studying Liberal Arts and Science: Humanities and Social Science at the Troy, NY college.

In November 1988, Hudson Valley established the Alpha Xi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the only nationally recognized honor fraternity serving regionally accredited American institutions which offer associate's degrees.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is a highly coveted honor. Students eligible for membership must achieve a high cumulative grade point, be of good moral character, and possess recognized qualities of leadership. Induction into the chapter occurs in the fall and spring of each academic year. Scholarships to four-year institutions are available to Phi Theta Kappa members.

An induction ceremony took place, Thursday, Nov. 21, in the college’s Maureen Stapleton Theatre. Click here for a photo gallery of the induction ceremony.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers 75 degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and workforce and academic preparation programs offered through the Educational Opportunity Center. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 13,000 students, and it is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining. Hudson Valley has more than 75,000 alumni.
