Andrew Edwards of Troy Earns 2017 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

2017 Apr 4

Andrew Edwards of Troy, a student at Hudson Valley Community College, was recently named as a recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence.

Edwards, a Physical Education Studies major, has a 4.0 GPA and has been on the President’s List for three consecutive semesters. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students at two-year colleges and works as a veteran peer mentor for the college’s Center of Academic Engagement. Edwards also is the student manager of the college’s football team and a member of the Black and Latino Student Union. He is scheduled to graduate this spring and will continue his education in the field of physical therapy.

The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created 20 years ago to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.

This year, four students from Hudson Valley were recognized with this prestigious honor.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary members of their college communities who are graduating. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor's Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence.
