Doyle Guyatte of Clifton Park Joined Classmates in Regional Engineering Competition

2012 May 9

Doyle Guyatte of Clifton Park was among 18 Hudson Valley Community College students from the Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology and Architectural Technology programs who participated in the Regional Student Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe Competition in Potsdam in April. Sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers which has student chapters at each college, the conference was hosted by Clarkson University and SUNY Canton.

Guyatte worked with classmates to design and construct a 20-foot long concrete canoe and a model steel bridge capable of supporting 2500 pounds in the competition against RPI, RIT, Clarkson, SUNY Canton, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY IT, West Point, Cornell and ETS from Montreal. The canoe was judged on racing ability and aesthetics, while the bridge was judged on weight-bearing capacity, ease of assembly, aesthetics, weight of structure, lateral and vertical deflection and efficiency. For each contest, the teams also presented judges with a written technical report on their construction process.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 13,500 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training. Hudson Valley has more than 65,000 alumni.
