Skye Schaefer of Troy is Chosen as Peer Tutor at Hudson Valley Community College

2015 Dec 22

Skye Schaefer of Troy served as a peer tutor in Hudson Valley Community College's Learning Assistance Center (LAC) during the Fall 2015 semester.

Schaefer, who is studying in the Engineering Science academic program, provided tutoring assistance in math and chemistry.

Peer tutors are nominated by their faculty to fill a crucial role in the college's LAC. Students who are recommended must be on the Deans' or President's List or come with a strong recommendation from a faculty member in a certain subject area.

This paid student worker position allows the peer tutor to provide academic assistance to their fellow students one-on-one or in small groups, provide successful study strategies and help students develop confidence in their own academic abilities.

The LAC also is staffed by full- and part-time education specialists and part-time professional tutors who provide instruction in math, learning strategies and other content areas.

The LAC also provides activities and programs designed to help students increase their confidence and independence as they work to develop their academic skills. Instructional support programs and services are available to full- and part-time students taking day or evening classes.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 75 degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training. Hudson Valley has more than 70,000 alumni.
